Waste Management invites over half a million fans to imagine how awkward life is without water throughout the 2015 and 2016 Waste Management Phoenix Opens. Over $50,000 was raised by the Thunderbirds for water restoration projects in Arizona’s Verde Valley representing $1 for each fan who wore green to the event on Green Out Day.
In June of 2013, Silk (a plant-based beverage brand), commissioned 3D chalk artist Kurt Wenner to create an interactive map of the Colorado River in Chicago's Union Station. Passers by were invited to text "RIVER" to 77177 to restore 1,000 gallons of water.
In Spring of 2015, REVERB engages college students in pledging to conserve water during the Lee Brice Campus Consciousness tour. Concert goers were invited to text "REVERB" to 77177 to enter to win artist meet and greets and to restore 1,000 gallons of water. In April 2016, Change the Course was featured on the Alabama Shakes SE Tour and received over 1,200 uses of a special Snapchat geofilter.
Christian McGuigan of Participant Media speaks to 17,000 We Day fans in 2013, 2014, and 2015, inviting people to text "RIVER" to 77177 to restore 1,000 gallons of water. We Day has been our most successful engagement in terms of text to pledge metrics generating an average of 3,000 texts per event.
Cinemark Theaters shows Change the Course video in over 100 theaters in partnership with Coca-Cola. Theater audiences were asked to text "COKE" to 77177 before putting their phones away for the start of the movie.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts places Change the Course water conservation messaging in hotel lobbies and elevators in partnership with Coca-Cola. Hotel visitors were invited to text "STARWOOD" to 77177 to restore 1,000 gallons of water.
Through its Gallons for Goals program, the National Hockey League has restored over 50 million gallons of water since 2011. In 2014, they invited employees to text “NHL" to 77177 to restore 1,000 gallons per text. Select teams, including the Minnesota Wild and Anaheim Ducks, have also invited fans to pledge to conserve by texting “Wild" or “Ducks" respectively to 77177.
KOHLER provides WaterSense water saving devices (shower heads, toilets, etc.) as incentives and rewards for people who make a pledge to conserve.
Finlandia Vodka creates point of sale messaging at grocery stores in Arizona, and plans to expand to Colorado in 2016.
Student sustainability groups from UCLA and USC activated Change the Course engagement campaigns around Rivalry Week on campus in Fall of 2014 and 2015. Unique SMS codes “Trojans” and “Bruins” were used to track pledges and drive competition. The Bruins came out on top both years! 2015 total was 1,285 texts (844 Bruins and 441 Trojans) 2014 total was 2,364 texts (1,223 Bruins and 1,141 Trojans)
CU Boulder created its own Water for the West campaign in partnership with Wells Fargo Foundation that includes texting “CUWater” to pledge to conserve, activating Buffs fans, and installing low-flow devices in under-served communities. As a result, 20 million gallons of water were restored through direct support of Change the Course water restoration projects in the Colorado River Basin; 46,000+ in-venue campaign impressions were received during 8 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Games; 1,003 text pledges to conserve were made; and the FLOWS Program launched its pilot phase in May 2016 with a goal to install low-flow devices in 100 under-served households per year.
Portland Trail Blazers is the first team to balance 100% of their venue’s annual water use through Water Restoration Certificates® from BEF. In 2016, Wells Fargo sponsored the Trail Blazers Water Game to promote Change the Course. 19,393 fans attended; 922,000 gallons were restored through 922 “Blazers” text pledges to conserve; and an additional 5 million gallons of water were restored by Wells Fargo’s direct contribution.
NBA All-Star Draymond Green recorded a video inviting DubNation fans to conserve water that was shared on Golden State Warriors' social media channels. Golden State Warriors received support from a key sponsor (BMW) to give away a BMWi3 as part of a water engagement campaign that ran Feb-Mar 2016. Warriors fans were asked to make the Change the Course pledge to be eligible to win the BMWi3. Over 10,000 fans were engaged with the campaign through this activation.
New sustainable restaurant Wild Standard opens in Boulder and raises funds to restore water to Colorado rivers at a benefit dinner in Fall of 2015.
The 2016 ESPN X-Games invited a local NGO partner of Change the Course to have a table educating fans about Colorado water restoration, while ESPN makes a contribution to restore a local river.
